The first case of an Indian celebrity testing positive of the novel coronavirus has emerged from Lucknow. Baby Doll singer Kanika Kapoor confirmed the news on Friday on social media and wrote, “For the past 4 days I have had signs of flu, I got myself tested and it came positive for Covid-19. My family and I are in complete quarantine now and following medical advice on how to move forward.”
The singer had recently returned from London and then travelled from Mumbai to Lucknow on March 11. In her post, Kanika wrote, “I was scanned at the airport as per normal procedure 10days ago when I came back home, the symptoms have developed only 4 days ago.” However, as per sources and reports, she had a cough when she reached Lucknow. As per social media speculations she got past Lucknow airport without adequate screening with the help of some airport staff.
The singer confirmed the news on her social media handle on Friday
According to her father Rajiv Kapoor, Kanika reached Mumbai from London on March 10 and then the next day she flew to Lucknow. “She was normal when she came to Lucknow and had no signs of any illness. In fact, she attended three-four social gathering while she was here. We also visited Kanpur for a day where her nana-nani live. Then we were busy shifting our home,” informs Kapoor, adding, “It was only two days ago that Kanika had slight fever, a running nose and cough, so we consulted our family doctor who suggested that we send her samples for testing for COVID-19. So we called up the CMO and requested him for the tests which unfortunately came out positive for Kanika. But we have been in isolation since the past three days and have confined ourselves in our home. The health department is sending a team to collect my wife and my samples too. Our whole family will be tested now.”
On Thursday, residents of the high rise apartment that the singer lives in saw an ambulance of the King George’s Medical University in the society, reportedly to take Kanika’s samples to the hospital. According to her neighbours, Kanika was taken to the hospital on Friday morning in an ambulance.
After a week of socialising, hundreds of people will be screened
For almost a week, Kanika was active socially in Lucknow. She wrote that “contact mapping of people I have been in touch with is underway as well.” As per sources, she attended a party thrown by a Lucknow-based builder at a politician’s house last Saturday. The party was attended by senior bureaucrats, politicians and other well-known people of Lucknow, and everyone will now be screened for the coronavirus. Reportedly the singer also visited a skin specialist and a salon in the city. The apartment complex where she lives is under lockdown and all the residents and domestic helps are being screened for the virus.
Public reaction to the news was a mix of sympathy for the singer and anger at the fact that she did not take greater precautions to avoid the spread of the virus.
