Rani Mukerji returned to the big screen in 2018 with Hichki, after a gap of four years. The movie received critical acclaim and turned out to be a success at the box office earning Rs 46.21 crore in India. After its China release, Hichki became a blockbuster, earning Rs 250 crore worldwide. Her last film before her four-year hiatus was a cop drama Mardaani, which was a critical as well as commercial success.
She is now all set to return to the action avatar with Mardaani 2. Releasing the first still from the film, makers revealed earlier today that the movie will hit the screens on December 13. It will be interesting to see two cop dramas releasing in a week’s time as a week later, Salman Khan starrer Dabangg 3 will be hitting the screens on December 20. While Dabangg 3 is a masala entertainer, Mardaani 2 is more of a serious cop drama.
Announcing the release date of Mardaani 2 on Twitter, trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “Release date finalized… #Mardaani2 to release on 13 Dec 2019… Stars Rani Mukerji… Will be her next film release, after the smash HIT #Hichki… #Mardaani2 launches a new face as the antagonist… Directed by Gopi Puthran… Produced by Aditya Chopra.”
Mardaani marked the debut of Tahir Raj Bhasin, who played the main antagonist in the film and won everyone’s heart with his evil act. Mardaani 2 will see the debut of a new actor as the lead villain. Let’s just hope, the new villain turns out to be as interesting as, if not better than, Tahir’s character from the previous film.
While Mardaani was helmed by Pradeep Sarkar, Mardaani 2 is directed by Gopi Puthran. Gopi had earlier written the stories of Mardaani and Lafangey Parindey. This will be his directorial debut.
