If there is one franchise in Bollywood that has won over the love and adoration of cinegoers over the years then it is the Golmaal series starring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sharman Joshi, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Shreyas Talpade. The film series which started with ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’ in 2006 saw three more instalments which turned out to be blockbusters. The original Golmaal recently completed 13 years and we got in touch with the Golmaal actor Tusshar Kapoor, who opened up about his favourite instalment and even confirmed that there is a new sequel in the making.
Talking about the huge success of ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’, Tusshar said, “It’s a great feeling and recently I saw on Twitter that people are reacting to it, talking about it which feels good. It brought me to that point when we were making the film, we didn’t know that it’ll be appreciated in this fashion. It wasn’t an experiment and we didn’t even know that it’ll become a franchise as we were just making a film. The entire team of Rohit, Ajay and all had come together for the first time and it was on the sets that the chemistry began to grow. It was all unplanned and we were just working hard work on the sets and eventually, it became this big.”
Furthermore, talking about his character Lucky, he said, “Back then we didn’t think that a mute character like Lucky would become this popular as there were many other comedy films like ‘Garam Masala’, ‘Hungama’ or ‘Hera Pheri’ which had a lot of dialogues, punchlines and gags, so how would the audience notice the comedy here. I still remember those months when I was attending workshops for this character and doing rehearsals to get into the skin of the character. I was pretty unsure then but my tutor, who was from theatre had come up with this idea of coming up with sounds so that we just don’t stick with sign language. I would even like to thank Rohit and the team for not making the character a ‘bichara’ on whom people would just be having pity. They wanted me to sound brat, naughty, animated and quite a prankster, so that’s what I had to get into during the workshops. But we still we didn’t know how people would react to this character and will they accept this character but thanks to god the audience did connect with this character as well.
When quizzed if his son Laksshya has watched any of the ‘Golmaal’ films, the versatile actor replied, “No, he is still too small to watch any films. But he likes to watch cartoon and animated shows on the internet. I haven’t even shown him any movie yet as I think he’s too small to understand it yet.”
With the ‘Golmaal’ franchise becoming a huge hit amongst the audience, we even asked Tusshar which one of it was his favourite. “I enjoyed shooting for the second instalment the most because everything was so relaxed and we were sure of what we were doing. We had already succeeded once which gave us more confidence. We were all enjoying while filming this movie as we knew that people would watch this one as the first film had already done so well. The second one became easier also as now I was working with friends now and there was a lot more fun. But as far as my role is concerned, the first part was the most challenging one as there was a lot of risks involved in it. I had to give it all as I had to stand out in so many comic actors that’s why it was much more challenging,” he said.
We even asked Tusshar the question everyone’s wanting to know about the fifth instalment of the popular film series. Confirming the fifth instalment of the ‘Golmaal’ series, he said, “I don’t know about it yet as Rohit would be the best person to answer this. Am sure that it’ll be made but not sure in which year.”
